I have spent a few years reviewing shooting optics for different brands and websites. There has been a lot of variance in deciding if an optic is worth purchasing however there are some key details that I focused on which has stayed true for me.
- Clarity and brightness of the reticle – A shooting optic should have a clear and bright reticle, which allows the shooter to quickly and accurately acquire their target.
- Magnification and field of view – The magnification and field of view of a shooting optic should be appropriate for the intended use, whether it be close-quarters combat or long-range precision shooting.
- Durability and reliability – Shooting optics should be able to withstand harsh environments, extreme temperatures, and heavy recoil. The optic should be durable and reliable, able to withstand the rigors of frequent use.
- Ease of use and adjustments – The optic should be easy to use and make adjustments to, with clearly labelled and accessible buttons, turrets, or dials for making windage, elevation, and focus adjustments.
- Battery life – The battery life of a shooting optic should be long enough to last through extended shooting sessions, with a low battery indicator to warn the shooter when it’s time to replace the battery.
- Mounting options and compatibility – Shooting optics should be compatible with a wide range of mounting options, with the ability to easily and securely attach to a variety of firearms.
- Value for money – The price of a shooting optic should be reasonable for the quality and features it offers, with a good balance of affordability and performance.
- Overall performance and accuracy – The shooting optic should provide accurate and reliable targeting, allowing the shooter to make precise shots consistently. The overall performance should meet the intended use, whether it be for competition shooting, hunting, or tactical operations.
With these criteria, I have been able to review and decide quite effectively if an optic is worth purchasing or recommending to others not being solely based on merit and personal opinion.
